Maverick Perez's Community Project
For this year community project, I joined kean cougars care service and adopted a park. The park we adopted is warinanco park, located in Roselle Nj. Warinanco Park is one of the 36 parks the Union County has. For this project, we worked with the head manager of the environmental health for the Union County. Since it was only a good amount of us we were split up into 3 groups. The goal was to clean up the entrance of the park which included collecting garbage and touching up the front of the lake entrance. Group 1 focused on collecting the litter around the area, group 2 collected any branches and sticks that the weather has caused to fall off the trees, group 3 included myself the director and another kean student. We focused on raking, cutting and collecting trash that the rain has washed towards the lake.
Picture before we got our hands dirty! You can see all the debris that has accumulated over some time.
We focused on the entrance view of the lake- started by collecting all the garbage and wood sticks that have accumulated over time. After gathering all the garbage I went through and started trimming the trees and plants to make it look more neater. It was very interesting because of all the new things I got to learn. We learned that trees have certain branches that are dead and it is very important to cut them off. Old branches can observe the amount of sunlight and air that can circulate through the tree. We noticed that some of the smaller trees were tilting towards the sun, but because trees have the ability to change over time and adapt their growth to the direction of the sun.
A Lot of trash was collected, we found all types of unnecessary waste, from knives to socks and most of it was from grooming and trimming. As you can see from the picture below us.
The satisfaction and energy that this event has giving me has motivated me and change my view on many things. Over all this experience was amazing, it not has only impacted me to want to start contributing more to our environment, but it has motivated me to want to take part into this new direction our generation is leading towards and that is sustainability. We are seeing the increasing damage and the scarce climate change is creating and its increasing rapidly. It was very exciting working with the director of the environmental health program , i was able to learn many new things that are not initially in my field of study. As we lead into a direction where sustainability will become the norm we look at one important aspect of sustainability and that is systems thinking. Systems thinking is is a way to see how everything i connected to the rest of the world and to continue improving from our current crisis we would have to come together and
realize that everything we do does and will always affect all of us.
In this picture you are able to see the outcome of our work.
Cleaner and Greener
Thank you !
